I saw that in a theatre in LA introduced by Tommy Wisseau himself in like 2008 or so. Back then, he thought that the people who were there the people who understood the movie. Now he claims that it was supposed to be a comedy, but that was definitely not his view when he made it.

I met Tommy Wiseau (and threw a football with him!) and he did a Q&A at the theatre where we went to see The Room. He talks, but doesn't say anything, and makes me question my existence.

I'd say the problem is that people understood the movie better than he did.
